This past Monday was our most successful day so far! Nathan and I both applied for this painting pottery place in manhattan called "Make Meaning". We had a group interview with about 10 other people on Monday morning. The place was so laid back and very personable. We chose to apply here because we wanted to work somewhere that was creative, hands on, and fun! Well, that day we both got a call offering us each a job at MAKE! YAY!! WE HAVE JOBS NOW!!! There are 4 different MAKE stores in Manhattan and we work at two different stores. Nathan works at the Make store on the upper west side and I work at the Make store in the FAO Schwarz toy store on 5th Ave. We were told by our store managers that the Make stores are popular for some celebrities. The 'celebrities' like to rent out the entire store for their friends and family to paint pottery together. Nathan's upper west side store is popular to Matt Damon and mine in FA0 is popular to Beyonce. So, thats a nice little perk to the job. :)
After our interview on Monday morning with Make, we headed to an audition. This was an Open Call audition for a new musical that would give equity points if you landed the job. The audition is for a 'reading' of the musical to a group of sponsers. The NY Barn Theatre has created a new musical based on a true story about a highschool in Texas. The musical is called "Speargrove Represents". It is about a highschool putting up the musical 'Rent' and how controversial it is in the highschool and community. The musical is kind of like the TV show 'Glee' or High School Musical with a more dramatic edge to it. Well, they were looking for various actor/singers to play: a male geek, a male jock who gets all the ladies, a girl who has a hard time fitting in, and a popular girl. Well, Nathan and I both got an appointment and waited in line. We got to sing 16 bars of a contemporary musical theatre song and then the 'people behind the table' in the audition room would choose then if they wanted to see more of you. I sang 'hit me with a hot note' and was then asked to sing a more legit (classical) song. The producer said "just like 4 bars" (4 BARS?? GEEZ! I MEAN THEY JUST WANT TO HEAR SOME HIGH NOTES..haha) So, I sang a clip of "Glitter and Be Gay" and sang some high notes..haha. They all laughed and reacted very happy and loud. They then asked me to read for the character 'Caroline' (the popular girl). Nathan went into the room and sang "What do I need with Love" and they then asked him to read for "Ricky" the jock who gets all the ladies (typical).
So far this is a very good sign. They liked our voices so they then wanted to see us act the role they think our look and voice would fit. So we were asked to look over a scene for our characters and then to go back into the audition room when we were ready.
I went back into the room and read a scene with a producer. They said thank you and I walked out of the room. I then noticed that one of the producers/writers came out of the room to find me. He asked to speak to me and then said that he wanted to tell me a little bit more about the character Caroline. (this is always a good sign when someone from the audition room wants to 'direct' you, it usually means they think you have potential) So he gave me a few pointers and then told me that they wanted to see me again later that day to read Caroline's monologue in the show.
Nathan went back in the room to read his scene and I could hear all of the production staff laughing their heads off at Nathan. (thats a good sign...the scene was supposed to be funny)
They also asked to see Nathan another time later that day.
So we went and ate lunch and studied our scenes.
I went back into the room to read the monologue and they seemed to respond pretty well.
Nathan also went back into the room and they also seemed to respond well.
So, in conclusion..this audition went very well for us. The farthest they were taking actors were through 2 callbacks, which we each had. So we went the farthest we could go! We hope to be receiving a call from this company, but the truth of the matter is WHO KNOWS? We might not ever hear anything from them. So all we can do is walk away from the audition experience with a big smile! It felt so good to be able to sing two contrasting songs for people as well as read and act. It feels good to have someone give you a chance!
Monday was a good day for us.
We got jobs at a painting pottery place and had a wonderful audition!
Thank you so much for your prayers, they are definitely helping!
